ISL Spring 2025 Tournament – Spanish Point Boat Club, Bermuda

The International Snooker League Spring Tournament took place at the Spanish Point Boat Club from Monday, May 19th to Saturday, May 24th. The event was a resounding success, featuring 46 players. The Spanish Point Boat Club proved to be an ideal venue, boasting five tables, including four specially set up for the event, all in excellent condition.

The tournament kicked off on Monday with a Pot Luck fun knockout event featuring 30-minute frames, where 16 local players competed against 16 visiting ISL players. Caroline Purcell (OX Billiards/NYAC) emerged victorious, defeating Dwight Murray (Ranchmens) in the final. The Opening Reception welcomed all participants and guests before the main tournament began with the Team event on Tuesday morning. Twelve teams competed in two groups of six on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stephens Green Club (Tommy Doherty, Connor Maguire & Richard George) won Group A, with the Bermuda Hurricanes (Steve Bremar, Aaron Bean & Henryk Marszalek) runners-up. In Group B, the Vancouver Team (Rick MacKenzie, Declan Tiernan & Rick Duncan) emerging as winners, with Ireland (Paul Sammin, Donal Boylan & Philip Grant) finishing second. The semi-finals and final were held on Saturday, with Ireland ultimately triumphing 2-1 over the Bermuda Hurricanes.

The Doubles event saw 18 pairings compete, with NYAC’s Doug Lavanture and Steve Bremar facing Philip Grant and Toronto’s Nick Macos in the final. Philip and Nick claimed victory. The Handicap Singles event spanned several days, culminating in the semi-finals and final on Saturday. Christian Youngers (OX Billiards) won against Steve Pavlick (Halifax) 2-1. The first-round losers entered the consolation competition, now named the Mike Mitchell Cup, which Bermuda’s Tyler Moniz won by defeating fellow Bermudian Kyle Williams in the final. Steve Bremar was determined to secure a trophy after falling short in the Team and Doubles events. In the scratch final, he successfully defended his title, beating Handicap Singles Champion Christian Youngers 3-0 to retain the Kenny Shea Scratch trophy. Christian also won the High Break award with a break of 55 earlier in the week.

The OX Billiards team streamed the finals and all play on the TV table throughout the event, with commentary for the finals. Many thanks to Mike Dominguez and Christian for organising this. Check out YouTube if you haven’t already! On Wednesday, sixteen ladies enjoyed a lunch organised by Penny DeSilva. Friday night featured a sunset cruise with special guests, three-time world champion Mark J. Williams and 2022 world senior champion Lee Walker, making for a memorable evening.

Finals night on Saturday began with a performance by a steel pan drummer, followed by a vibrant show by the Bermuda Gombeys against the backdrop of a stunning Bermudian sunset and moongate. Mark Williams presented all the trophies, and the President’s Award was presented to Rick MacKenzie for his significant contributions to the International Snooker League—a well-deserved recognition of Rick’s passion for snooker and the ISL.
I am delighted to announce that Mark Williams is a new ISL Honorary Life Member, following in the footsteps of Ray Reardon who sadly passed away last year. We look forward to seeing Mark at future ISL events and we are honoured he accepted.

On Sunday, many of us stayed on for the exhibition match between Mark and Lee. In addition, several of us got the opportunity to play a frame against Mark. Incredibly we saw Mark make not one but two 147s over the course of the evening. A night many of us won’t forget.!

Finally, heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, especially those who helped throughout the week, and to the Bermuda subcommittee (Paul Fedden, Steven Bremar, Victoria Fedden & Penny DeSilva) for their efforts in organising and supporting the event.
